Free Motion Quilting Workshop

Ever wanted to try free motion quilting, or tried it but weren't happy with the results? Come to the FMQ Workshop with Pam Cobb to figure out how to optimize your machine and get into the groove to make beautiful quilts! We will practice setting up your machine, adjusting tension and other machine settings, and practice a number of simple FMQ patterns.

The workshop will be Saturday June 23rd at 1pm in the main classroom at Tiny Stitches in Marietta GA. The cost is $10 for members, and $15 for non-members. Registration for non-members will open on June 9th to give our members a chance to sign up first.  Class cost includes sample quilt sandwiches for practice.

When you come to the workshop you'll need to bring:
  • The sewing machine you'll be using for FMQ. If you have a knee lift for your machine, consider bringing it. Please also bring an extension table for your machine if you have one.
  • 2 colors of thread. We recommend a 50 weight thread like Aurifil, Superior, or YLI. You can also quilt with a thicker thread like Gutterman, but would need a larger needle (see below).  You'll use one color for the top and one for the bobbin so you can see any tension or speed issues in your FMQ. Since the samples will be muslin, having colored thread will show up best, but you can work with a white/cream and a colored thread.
  • Needles - Each machine is different, but usually a universal needle in size 80 or 90 will work well for FMQ. We'll talk about other types of needles that may also work in the workshop.
  • A large-eye or self-threading needle to practice weaving in the thread tails.
  • General sewing supplies like scissors, seam ripper, etc.
These items are helpful if you have them, but not necessary:
  • Gloves with rubberized fingertips. There are quilting specific brands like Machingers, but you can sometimes find gardening gloves with rubberized fingertips at the dollar store or discount store.
  • A snack.
  • A sense of humor.
